Africa amidst other crises faces an immense energy crisis. Although Africa has been endowed abundantly with natural resources, but the continent is not able to capitalize on the ample wind, wave and solar power that it has been blessed with. Due to this, two out of three Africans are living without access to electricity.
Energy can help reduce poverty and boost the economy of the continent as all major sectors, i.e. agriculture, education, technology, etc. need a reliable and cost efficient energy to run. The rural areas are mostly the ones that are hit with this energy crisis as the people living there are unable to afford the cost of transporting electricity from the large power plants.
Seeing this gap, many new startups have been launched in Africa whose sole purpose is the provision of renewable energy by utilizing the vast amount of renewable sources the continent has been endowed with.
AFRICAN CLEAN ENERGY
One such startup is the African Clean Energy initiative that was founded by Judith Joan Walker along with his stepfather Stephen Walker and brother Ruben Walker. African Clean Energy aims to provide easy energy solutions to Africa and other developing nations of the world. The trio behind African Clean Energy recognized the vital issue of open cook fire and indoor smoke pollution using dirty and dangerous fuel in Africa. This matter results in up to four million deaths a year!
FUNCTIONALITY OF ACE 1- THE ULTRA-CLEAN BIOMASS COOKSTOVE
To address this issue, they developed the ACE 1, the Ultra-Clean Biomass Cookstove that is successful in burning biomass cleanly whether indoors or outdoors. ACE 1 reduces fuel consumption up to 70% and saves 50% of costs. These cost savings and clean fuel consumption can radically improve the standard of living of women and child who do the major cooking and are exposed to the polluted smoke.
USAGE OF ACE 1
In actuality, the ACE 1 is developed to meet 3 needs; cooking, lighting and mobile phone charging. The technology inside ACE 1 is programmed to blow oxygen through a fan into the chamber holes at the top and bottom. This leads to the fire temperature to reach1000°C. The high temperature causes the biomass to gasify. When the hot gas meets more oxygen, its combusts entirely and no smoke is released. This stove can produce up to 5kW of energy. The battery inside ACE 1 is connected to the fan and can power the fan for up to 20 hours as well as be used to charge a mobile phone and run LED lighting. The battery itself is charged through a small built in solar panel inside.
